What changed since the August report

The dorm is now, not . Joni moved from a shared room to a single room; the ATM pattern says this started in July (one withdrawal at the start of each month since July 1, against – before). Re-priced, the budget cap rises by to — and the story of July and August flips: what looked like two months of overshoot was mostly the room. July lands under the re-based cap, August under, and food in both months sits just inside its envelope.

One assumption to confirm with Joni: that the single room began with the July payment. If it started later (August), July's dorm was still and July's cash food was instead of .

The month in one sentence

August closed at : the in cash (dorm plus for living) and a quiet card side of — restaurants over their envelope, groceries far under, nothing else notable. September has started the same way: the dorm-and-change withdrawal on the 6th, more on the 3rd, and on the card in ten days, which is a pace of roughly for the card side and about all-in — just under the cap, just over the hard target.

The year so far

All-in monthly spending, January–September. Dashed lines mark the hard target and full cap; they step up in July when the single room starts (/ before, / after). Months whose bars cross their cap are drawn in the over-budget color. September's lighter bar (*) covers only the 1st–10th. Hover any bar for detail; the table below carries the same data.

Food = eating out + groceries/konbini + cash beyond the dorm. August closed above the Aug 23 snapshot in the last report — the final week added little. January–February predate the June budget agreement and are shown against the same yardstick for context; in Jan, Feb and Apr, cash withdrawn was below the dorm cost, so those months' dorm was covered outside the ATM pattern.

How the envelopes shifted

Each month's spending stacked by envelope. Cash (blue) took over the stack from June onward — and from July, of every blue bar is the single room. Card categories stayed roughly steady all year; August's card side () is the lowest since February. Hover any segment for the number.

The pattern is stable and it is a restaurant-for-groceries swap. Cash food and eating out run over their envelopes by together; groceries run under by . Net, food is on budget — meals just moved from the supermarket to Sukiya, konbini counters and cash. Everything else (shopping, entertainment, care, trips) came in well under, which is what made August a comfortable month.

Funding vs. spending

MonthParents addedBudget (cap)Spent (approx.)
June$970$1,159~$1,010
July (single room from here)$1,310$1,347~$1,314
August$1,190$1,347~$1,151
September (thru 10th)$1,300$1,347~$845 so far

With the room re-priced, funding and spending have been tracking each other closely rather than funding chasing an overshoot. The September 1 top-up of $1,300 became at Wise's rate — short of the new cap, above the hard target. A monthly transfer of $1,347 (or ¥215,378 fixed on the yen side) funds the cap exactly.

Same shape as July: frequency, not size. 36 konbini visits and 14 Sukiya runs in one month — many small meals bought one at a time. That is exactly what a weekly food number makes visible.

Actions

  1. Confirm the room. Ask Joni to confirm the single room costs and started with the July payment. Every number on this page from July on assumes it.
  2. Re-base the budget officially. New cap , hard target , funding $1,347 a month (or a fixed yen amount). The food cap stays — Joni has been inside it for two months, so the number is proven, not aspirational.
  3. Food pace for the rest of September: left for 20 days, about a week — and no more cash withdrawals this month, since the beyond the dorm is already out.
  4. The dorm stays cash — that is fine, just name it. The room can only be paid in yen notes, so the rule is simple: the first withdrawn each month is rent, everything withdrawn after it is the cash food envelope ( budgeted, actual in July and August). That second number is the one to watch.
  5. Keep the grocery lever in view. The unused in groceries against overflowing restaurants and cash food is still the cheapest fix. September's FamilyMart total suggests part of that swap is already happening.
Method notes: OUT transactions in JPY, COMPLETED only; REFUNDED rows excluded; internal balance conversions (NEUTRAL) excluded. ATM withdrawals count as spending on the day withdrawn — physical cash still in the wallet isn't visible to this model. Dorm is assumed paid from cash each month: (shared room) through June, (single room) from July, inferred from the withdrawal pattern and to be confirmed. The cap keeps the June 2026 envelopes and buffer and only re-prices the room: + = . Tuition-scale items (Flywire, $2,942 in May) sit outside the monthly model. USD figures converted at ¥159.91/$, the family's most recent actual Wise conversion (Sep 1 2026, $1,295.98 → ¥207,240); dollar values are approximations for orientation, the ledger's native currency is yen. Across 2026 the actual Wise rates ranged ¥152.8–163.7/$ (±3.5%), so month-to-month comparisons in dollars carry FX noise that has nothing to do with spending behavior — judge trends in yen.
