Joni Budget Calculator

The card categories are budgeted from what Joni actually spends (Apr–Aug 2026 medians) — no wishful numbers. The two sliders are the negotiation: how much breathing room on the card side, and what the cash envelope should honestly be.

Cash foodslider — Joni's call

The honest finding behind this page: card spending has been on budget all along (≈¥90K/month vs ≈¥89K planned), and once the dorm is priced at its single-room cost of ¥85,000, July and August land under the re-based cap too. The cash number is the only line still set by promise rather than measurement.

The deal that makes it stick

1. Cash is rent first. The room can only be paid in cash, so the first ¥85,000 withdrawn each month is rent by definition and everything beyond it is the cash-food line. No guessing, no asking — the ledger reads it off the withdrawals.

2. Joni sets the sliders. A budget chosen is kept far more often than a budget assigned. Agree the number together on this page, then it's his number.

3. Weekly funding, weekly food rule. A quarter of the budget every Monday. A blown week costs one lean week — not a blown month and a bailout.

4. Under budget = Joni keeps it. Whatever's left at month-end rolls into a trip fund. Overshoot has been refunded until now — that rewards overshooting. Flip the incentive.

Baselines: median of April through August 2026 card spending (August final), from the Wise export of 2026-09-10. Dorm ¥85,000 (single room since July 2026; ¥55,200 shared before) and eSIM ≈¥4,600 fixed. Reference cap ¥215,378 = the June 2026 cap re-priced for the room. USD at ¥159.91/$, the family's actual Wise conversion rate (Sep 1). Currency & inflation: this budget is yen-native by design — every expense is in yen, so yen is where trends are judged. The USD view is orientation at one snapshot rate; during 2026 the rate swung ¥152.8–163.7/$ (±3.5%), so the same ¥215,378 cap costs the parents between about $1,316 and $1,410 depending on the month — FX noise, not behavior. Japanese inflation (~2–3%/yr) quietly tightens a fixed yen budget by roughly 1% per half-year; revisit the baselines at the January recalibration. Companion analysis: Joni's Yen Ledger.
